Moloken: Eternal Sleep

Swedish heavy music outfit Moloken confront mortality on Eternal Sleep, the third and final single from their forthcoming self-titled album. Described as the record’s heaviest song, it ventures into its darkest and most inevitable territory; death, eternity and the unknowable space that may exist beyond life.

Awareness of mortality arrives early for many of us, creating a fear that can remain buried for years without ever entirely disappearing. Eternal Sleep captures the moment those thoughts resurface and refuse to be silenced. It does not offer easy reassurance, instead Moloken allow the uncertainty itself to dominate, asking existential questions that can consume an entire lifetime.

“During periods of high stress, I sink deeper into my well of anxiety, and the thought of death slowly crawls into my awareness. I am alone with my thoughts, caught in an endless pondering with no clear answer. Why do I exist? And why will I no longer exist a few decades from now? My self-awareness can become a burden, and at times it is a very heavy one to carry,” says the band’s bassist and vocalist Nicklas Bäckström.

The song is dedicated to Kristoffer and Nicklas’ grandfather and to Patrik’s mother, both of whom have passed away. The personal grief gives its sentimental weight an intimate center. The people's physical presence may be gone, but the memory and spirit they leave behind continue to endure.
