Swedish sludge and doom trio Firebreather reveal Shrines, the latest single from their forthcoming fourth album, Blood That I Spill Turns to Fire. Released through Heavy Psych Sounds, the track delivers the kind of hard hitting riffs, oppressive weight and rhythmic force that has defined the Gothenburg band’s sound from the beginning.
Guitarist and vocalist Mattias Nööjd drives Shrines with riffs that feel both monolithic and fiercely mobile. The rhythm section reinforces that impact with a dense physicality, allowing the song to move as much as it crushes. Firebreather remain firmly rooted in doom, yet their attack carries the directness and aggression of sludge heavy rock.
Formed in 2016, the band have developed their sound across three previous full length albums. For the new record, they reunited with drummer Tommy Hanning, who had played with Firebreather during the sessions for their debut. After learning the material from his home in northern Sweden, Hanning flew south for a weekend of rehearsals before the group entered Studio Underjord with Joona Hassinen.
