Eventually Flowers examine the contradictions hidden within human nature on their brand new offering As You Grow. Written by Tom more than a decade ago, the song has finally found its home within his collaboration with Janise, bringing together the artists behind Tender Glue and Lavender Bones.
The track began with a story Tom’s mother told him about the day his uncle saved his life. Seriously ill and unable to breathe, he was carried shirtless through a freezing blizzard to receive help. What remained with Tom was not only the act itself, but the complicated character of the person responsible. His uncle had a troubled past and was not someone others might easily describe as good, yet in that moment he acted with complete selflessness.
Written in youth and understood more fully with time, the song treats growing older as a procees of learning to live with irresolvable tensions. It feels like an honest meditation on moral uncertainty and the beauty of accepting people as they are.
