Newcastle upon Tyne collective Loveable Wholes move beyond their familiar slowcore melancholy on Torn from the Hearts, a new collaboration with Jacob the Elder. Following the warmly received On the Ground There’s Cherry Blossom, the band returns with a more immersive encounter through dreampop, shoegaze and psychedelia.
The project’s intimate bedroom production remains present, but its simple lo-fi foundations are now surrounded by a more atmospheric approach and softly luminous textures. Psychedelic color filters through the sadness, giving the track a winsome, slightly unreal quality while allowing its mood to deepen without becoming entirely bleak.
Where earlier Loveable Wholes songs often expressed their melancholia openly, Torn from the Hearts works through abstraction and suggestion, with its evocative lyrics leaving space for personal interpretation. The result marks a natural but meaningful shift in direction that still appears modest and emotionally tender, but at the same time is broader and somewhat stranger.
