Irish shoegaze band Flywheel continue their renewed creative run with CryBaby, the second in a planned sequence of five new tracks. Originally dissolving in 1996, the group reunited in 2020 following the easing of the first pandemic restrictions and have spent the past three years steadily expanding their catalogue.
CryBaby moves with a strong rhythmic pulse while guitars and vocals blur into an otherworldly dreampop glow. Its atmosphere feels luminous but slightly uncanny, occupying that elusive space where melody, distortion and reverie begin to lose their familiar shapes.
Instead of simply recreating the music of their first era, Flywheel are refreshing its foundations and building outward. CryBaby retains the haze and emotional immediacy associated with the band’s earlier sound, yet its strange vibrancy belongs firmly to the present. This is a dreamlike return that continues to develop with every release.
