Australian synthpunk outfit screensaver release their new single Division, out digitally via their hometown label Poison City Records. The track draws together synthpunk and post punk with a steady krautrock pulse underpinning its momentum.
Its multi-layered foundation gives the song a sense of control, balancing its sharper edges with a subtle ease. Layers of forceful synths, driving bass, and jagged guitar lines come together in a dense, finely shaped sound.
The band comments on the new single: "Thematically, the lyrics hone in on the geopolitical state of the world. As the focus shifts perpetually and our attention is pulled in multiple directions, we’re left a fractured mess. We’re left divided by the distractions, crushed under the weight of a constant downpour of misinformation. The divide widens as we share the same space, the same air, the same earth. The very earth that we’re destroying in parallel as we fight against each other. Division is the mission and the powers that be are succeeding."
The song is accompanied by a video conceptualised by singer Krystal Maynard and directed and shot by drummer James Beck, inspired by the neo-noir dystopia of gritty 80’s sci-fi films. The video taps into this social commentary/calamity; examining our shared anxieties, our allegiances, tribalism and the dichotomy of the individual and the collective. There’s also an inescapable visual comparison to Romero and Fulci zombie films as they group clumps together, but they’re not flesh eaters. They are humans hungry for connection."
