Kicking: Reprieve

Reprieve arrives as the first glimpse into nothing personal, the upcoming EP from Jackson, Mississippi band Kicking, out April 30th, 2026 via Summer Darling Tapes. Recorded at Malaco Studios and brought into focus through the mixing and mastering work of Kent Bruce, the track settles comfortably into the band’s established language without feeling static.

Thick, grunge-leaning guitars carry a natural roughness, paired with a sense of control that keeps everything from spilling over. The band leans into grittiness and density, allowing the edges to stay intact while still giving space for melody to move through.

The song holds onto a familiar kind of tension. It circles the pull of returning to someone who feels like both refuge and harm, where comfort doesn’t cancel out the damage, and memory keeps reopening what should have closed. The song doesn’t resolve that contradiction, while the overall restraint is what gives it weight.
