Gooey Cookie: Bored To Tears

Denver power pop trio Gooey Cookie make their introduction with Gimme the Goo, an energetic debut EP released digitally and on cassette through Manic Mantra, the tape-only imprint of Convulse Records. Across its 17-minute runtime, the band deliver a set of loud songs that draw on the familiar warmth of classic alternative rock and slacker rock while adding a slightly stranger emotional edge.

The band’s name came about in a roundabout way, originating from a friend’s attempt to recall the group Gouge Away. The misremembered phrase stuck, eventually becoming Gooey Cookie, a title that carries the same playful looseness found in the band’s music.

Bored to Tears presents the band's clear affection for power pop’s melodic tradition, leaning into bright guitar hooks and unpretentious songwriting. Their version of that sound arrives with a little more volume and distortion, pushing the melodies through a lot of fuzziness while keeping the songs immediate and approachable. The track is a sweet, tightly constructed power pop number delivered at full volume.

Gimme the Goo serves as a confident first step for Gooey Cookie, as the EP shows a band comfortable embracing the simplicity of strong melodicism combined with loud guitars.
