Twelve years since their last full length release, Iceland’s beloved experimentalists múm are back. Their new album, History of Silence, arrives on September 19th, 2025, via Morr Music, marking a bold and reflective new chapter for the group.
Rather than picking up where 2013's Smilewound left off, múm have taken a deep dive inward. Over two years, they quietly constructed, dismantled, and reshaped the album’s sonic architecture, resulting in a work that feels both mature and characteristic of their unique musicianship. Echoes of their earlier moments like such as their acclaimed debut from 2001, Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK, reverberate, not particularly in nostalgia, but in a confident return to profundity and melodic nuance.
The theme which threads through History of Silence is distance. múm have long been fascinated with the idea, and in their new work they embrace it fully. The songs drift and hover, often resisting momentum in favor of presence.
Mild at Heart moves with ease and serenity. Overall, it is a light, and open-hearted piece that floats along a current of shifting rhythms, soft hooks, and vivid imagery.
