D//E Exclusive Premiere: Tom Schutzinger: Bed

Red is a short film by Del Kathryn Barton, starring Cate Blanchett, Alex Russell, Arella Plater, and the Sydney Dance Company's Charmene Yap. According to the director, the film's essential narrative "illuminates the unusual mating rituals of the Australian Red Back spider."

She further explains: "Here, our brave little male after copulating with the monumental female gently somersaults into her mouth, offering himself as a meal post-coital. If she is not hungry she will store his bound, dying body on her web for later consumption. This brutal chronicle spoke to me of the poetics of female power as an inherent and indeed, elemental force in the universe. By intercutting human protagonists with extraordinary macro footage, Red has evolved into what I now consider to be an uncompromising celebration of female power."

The original music for Red was written and performed after the film's darkness and intensity by composer Tom Schutzinger whom we've previously heard through his work for such films as Somersault, Jewboy, Yolk, Lucky Country, Caught Inside and The Pack. He was also a founding member of the Australian experimental electronic rock band, Decoder Ring, and he has collaborated with visual artists Murray Fredericks, Joshua Yeldham, Mika Utzon Popov and Del Kathryn Barton.

Bed is a brilliant and intense composition off the film's score, a lively synth track which amiably matches the short movie's darkness and fervency, and it's available to stream for the first time ever, right below...

The film was presented as part of the 2017 Adelaide Festival in January and runs through April 30th at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Watch the enchanting trailer below...

Tom Schutzinger's score for Red will be available on all digital platforms on April 14th via Lakeshore Records.
