Jae Matthews, long recognized as the voice behind Boy Harsher, emerges with a reinterpretation that feels both instinctive and deliberate. Taking on Buzz Kull’s Man On The Beat, she leans into its skeletal framework and draws out something more patient.
The single, released as a limited 12" by Heartworm Press, flows with a sense of control, with the commanding vocal sitting at the center, steady and effortless, directing the music through an environment of tension and dark conditions. The arrangement has a cinematic flair, and it remains grounded and intimate. The rhythm is slower and more methodical, giving atmosphere primacy over propulsion.
On the B-side, Spike Hellis extend the track with a remix that opens up the rhythm, letting it breathe across the dancefloor, and preserving the sense of focus.
Matthews has made a new classic out of an established favorite, delivering enveloping darkwave at peak form.
