Down to the Graveyard is the second single from The Devil Is Real, the new project from the occult songwriter behind King Dude and multi-instrumentalist Justin Pittney out on Not Just Religious Music.
A haze of occult rock darkness, the track channels the spirit of classic garage rock and psychedelia, while incorporating the dreamy dissonance of modern alternative and shoegaze.
“I started this song like all The Devil Is Real songs, with a beautifully broken blues riff buried in tape echo,” says King Dude, aka TJ Cowgill. “Then lyrics came to me immediately, like a forgotten memory from a fever dream… They felt both familiar and new at the same time.”
The urgency palpitates through both the performance and the track’s spectral atmosphere. King Dude and Pittney forge a potent alliance rooted in their seasoned musicianship, that elevates this creative union into something spellbinding.
“My intention was to make The Devil into this occult rock band that had clear roots in the blues,” Cowgill says. “Now It feels like we are building a haunted house on that foundation.”
“It’s the most original thing I’ve ever worked on,” Pittney adds. “I was thinking about scenes, tone shifts… how it would feel if it were a film. It’s pop, it’s dramatic, it’s comically satanic... exactly what I hoped we’d make when we started this thing.”
