Silk: July

Silk, the new project from Virgins guitarist and songwriter, Michael Smyth, finds the artist as its sole member, writing, performing, and recording everything related to this act himself.

Michael describes the initiative behind Silk: “I constantly feel like I am rushing towards the inevitable infinite oblivion. Further exacerbated by the marking of years spent circling the sun. To that end, it’s important that I fill the time remaining with joyous, creative acts. The sharing of ideas is an essential part of that, which brings us to Silk.

The project grew out of a series of singles Michael initially recorded to sharpen his engineering and mixing skills. Those early experiments evolved into Silk, and with the new single July, we get to hear the first track written specifically for the project.

The track is Silk's most focused release yet, shifting from shimmering guitar layers to waves of distortion, fuzz, and feedback-heavy reverbs, as Michael sings of quiet betrayals. The result blends shoegaze’s dense, ethereal textures with the punch of nineties alt-rock.

For mixing and mastering, Michael teamed up with Allan McGreevy of New Pagans at Badlands Studio.
