Brooklyn’s dreamy post punk outfit Lathe of Heaven has announced their upcoming album, Aurora, due out August 29th, 2025 via Sacred Bones.
Born from an improvisational process, Aurora, doesn't leave the impression of an aimless work, instead it's a propulsive record which explores weighty themes with literary depth.
Alongside the announcement, Lathe of Heaven has released the album’s title track. Aurora is driven by crashing drums and shimmering guitars that bring to the forefront a beautiful atmosphere, together with the refined unification of post punk and new wave elements that the band handles so impeccably.
The single arrives with a music video directed by Devan Davies, bringing together arthouse cinema references and glitchy visual effects to match the track’s haunting qualities.
On the single, the band shares: "A song loosely inspired by an Arthur C. Clarke short story called “If I Forget Thee, O Earth..." In the story a man and his son take a trip from their colony on the moon to a lookout point where Earth (long abandoned due to nuclear war) can be seen rising across the vast gulf of space. Playing with this concept, I took a more personal and romantic approach, exploring similar themes of loss, love, and devotion at the end of the world."
