Los Angeles underground favorites Patriarchy keep turning up the heat of the summer with their new single, New Way. Produced by Twin Shadow, the track marks the second installment in the band’s Summer of Singles campaign, leading up to their much-anticipated third album, Manual for Dying, due out in September 2025.
As expected, New Way pulses with a provocative energy, fusing genres in a way that feels like an evolution for the band, and becomes a both seductive and daring new offering.
Twin Shadow unfolds: “Darker music has always drawn me in partly because it feels like ‘breaking the rules’ is a main tenet. I wanted to work with Patriarchy because I knew they would at some point (what turned out to be many points) in the process say ‘fuck it, yeah, let’s try that.’ You wouldn’t believe how uptight most musicians are…it was fun to explore and experiment.”
New Way further established a creative chemistry that seems to be defining the current era of the group’s sound.
“We wanted to make a filthy fun dance floor banger with big guitars in the spirit of Rammstein or KMFDM,” Patriarchy says. “Something that hits hard enough to move your body, and playful enough to make you blush.
“The hook lands right before each chorus — ‘a new way to…’ — leaving the listener to fill in the blanks while getting hit with infectious guitar riffs and sampled moans. Lyrically, we were drawn to suggestion — undefined desires, fluid identities, the tension of holding back in an age obsessed with oversharing. It felt more subversive to leave something unsaid — to rob the listener of the word they’re used to getting.”
