Oldest Sea was formed in 2017 by songwriter Sam Marandola as a personal exploration of the darker edges of experimental folk music. Initially a solo project, Oldest Sea has since evolved into a full band, expanding its sonic palette while retaining its haunting properties.
The new release, All Shall Love Me and Despair, is a collaborative effort with Dan Barrett of Have A Nice Life. The title track harks back to Oldest Sea's roots in dark folk, offering a brooding, minimalist sound. On the other hand, Side B, How Could the Same God, explores a heavier, more visceral direction, reflecting the band’s current, fuller sound. As a unit, the two tracks present a compelling duality; distinct yet unified in their shared vision of melancholic and evocative intensity.
"It's all an expression of feminine rage as well as grief," Marandola explains, emphasizing the emotional profundity of the music.
The release is also set to come out as a 7-inch vinyl in 2025.
