Crystal Canyon: Catatonia

Portland shoegazers, Crystal Canyon, are set to unveil their third album, Stars and Distant Light, on November 3rd, 2023. Their first single from the album is Catatonia which has been described by the band as “a party trip in the desert for the broken hearted on ecstasy.

Stars and Distant Light is the result of extensive collaboration among the band members. Staying true to the stereotype often associated with shoegazers who obsess over their equipment, the album presents sounds which could only be achieved after meticulous guitar recordings onto analog tape, honed through trial and error.

We started out demoing about sixteen or seventeen songs then finally narrowed down the songs to the nine that are on the record,” notes guitarist and engineer Todd Hutchisen who explains that the incorporation of more synthesizers and keyboard elements was deliberate, so to realize a richer sound.

We formed a band that sounded like the music we listened to,” says the band's own Lynda Mandolyn. “In the process, we’ve become a band we’d want others to hear.

Catatonia stands out as one of the anticipated album's more melodious highlights.
