Charmpit: Wild Wild Westfield

London through California quartet, Charmpit, kicked things off in 2016 with their appearance at London’s First Timers Festival, and released their first single a year later. The band is currently gearing up for the release of their debut full length, Cause A Stir, expected out April 3rd, 2020 through Specialist Subject Records.

The very charming Wild Wild Westfield embodies the band’s fun blend of surf rock, garage rock, jangle pop and post punk traits, and comes with an equivalently amusing clip of pure DIY aesthetics. In its three-minute purity the song follows closely the punk pop standards in a conscious and unpretentious manner, and lays out the exuberance in their sound.

Charmpit describe the buoyancy of Wild Wild Westfield with the following lengthy and absorbing statement: “In our youth, the go-to ‘public’ space for our parents to drop us off for an afternoon was THE MALL. We could have a taste of independence, they could feel safe knowing we were under the watchful eye of mall security. Kind of like the tween equivalent of the little fenced in baby playpen from Rugrats. Malls, which can be traced back to Victorian times long before their 80’s MOMENT, have historically been designed for women, a place to deposit us for safekeeping and a permissible place to spend our allowance. It’s also where swathes of 90s femmes had their first dates, first sexual experiences and committed their first crimes. Now that we’ve migrated from Southern California to London, the mall feels like a slice of home, like a portal in space and time. We are anarchists - and we are also SoCal femmes to the bone. Our love for the mall is as complicated as it is fierce - so we decided to say it with a song. ‘This mall is your land, this mall is my land, no femme is a fashion island!’
