The Braves: Hanging Church

One of the many reasons I have grown so very fond of everything Aussie dark punks, The Braves, have put out so far, is because I hear and see some of my favorite bands in their knockout sound and poise; bands such as The Birthday Party, Beasts Of Bourbon and The Gun Club.

It just so happened that one of those heroes, guitarist Spencer P. Jones (of Beasts of Bourbon, The Johnny's, Chris Bailey and The General Dog, a huge figure in the Australian scene who even toured Australia with The Gun Club) heard The Braves cover one of his songs, Clementine, for a tribute album, and now he is part of their latest single, Hanging Church, off their latest album, Carry on the Con.

Bridging the gap between the celebrated past of Australian post punk and its future, The Braves once more deliver something utterly compelling, gutsy and bold, just like the band's name suggests. Those punks' poetry and absorbing sound cannot and should not be missed.

They are fresh off their 22 shows in France, Germany and Spain and currently in preparations for a tour around Australia. Carry on the Con is available on vinyl through Beast Records (France) and Spooky Records (Australia).
