Madeline Goldstein: Other World

Also known as the frontperson of Portland synthpop act Fringe Class, Madeline Goldstein has been leaving a mark with a series of solo releases firmly placed in darkwave and dark electronica. Other World, the artist's forthcoming four-track EP will be out on May 11th, 2023 through à La Carte Records.

The title track of the upcoming EP, which comes after the recent Seed of Doubt from December 2022, is distinctly representative of the artist's shadowy sound and elegant aesthetics.

Goldstein comments on the new song: "Other World is a fever dream of a song lifted from the darkness of my loneliness. It’s about looking at the edge of your own desires but not being able to say what you really want. It’s about not advocating for yourself and the spiral of self-doubt in love and creativity.

Regarding the creative aim, Goldstein says: "I wanted to create a soundscape that was reminiscent of theatrical ballads from musicals and the most dramatic of 80s love songs. I dreamed of a saxophone to cry for me, as I said, 'I never ask for more' - but the music can do the asking for me. To me, it is currently the song I’m most in touch with, and feel is the closest to me personally."

Goldstein has been hard at work to produce the artful collection of songs which comprise Other World with assistance from producer and synthesist Matia Simovich whose credits include works by SRSQ, Riki, and Body of Light.

The new work of Madeline Goldstein, a dark and seductive take on dark synthpop, comes with a rather sullen approach, sitting confidently next to its peers, and leaving a strong impression.
