Idlewild: Dream Variations

Following an impressive, critically and commercially successful reunion album that was 2015's Everything Ever Written, Scottish alternative rockers, Idlewild, are gearing up for the release of their new, eighth LP, Interview Music.

Dream Variations is the opening track and first single off the album, a harmonious indie rocker with an expansive dreamlike feel, hued with a subtle hue of psychedelic Americana. It's a bold presentation of the band's most mature features, and an exciting first listen that suggests a solid return for the veteran act.

"A lot of the songs are about dreams and dreaming and the thoughts and ideas that come from this state," says the band's own, Roddy Woomble. "I live in the Scottish Highlands, and between there and California you’ve got two locations that can put you in a dream like state – driving down Sunset Boulevard as the sun sets or driving over the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula as the sun rises. The world seems unreal, magical. You’re dreaming through a landscape."

The new record marks the band's reunion with producer, Dave Eringa, who has previously worked on Idlewild's most celebrated albums, The Remote Part and 100 Broken Windows.

"What’s really important about Idlewild is that we are basically punk rock kids," Woomble adds about the band's current mindset and philosophy. "No one ever taught us how to play anything. We formed a band and we learned. In our own way. We were inspired by the bands we saw just getting up on stage, making a noise and exchanging ideas, and trying to change your ideas. That’s principally what the band still do. I’m not a kid rolling around screaming into a microphone on the floor anymore, but that ideal is still at our core."

Interview Music, the upcoming album by Idlewild is due out April 5th, 2019 via Empty Words.
