The Empty Page is the title of the opening track to Sonic Youth's 2002 album, Murray Street; a song was inspired by a famous line from Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums, his 1958 follow up to On the Road. It's where Manchester trio The Empty Page take their name from, showing right off the bat that their finesse and aestheticism comes on good grounds.
The band's debut album, Unfolding, was recorded in Vancouver, Canada, produced by Gggarth Richardson (RATM, Biffy Clyro, Melvins) and released in 2016, and it is now followed by a fresh new cut which distinctly showcases their growth, post punk ferocity and spirited execution.
"When The Cloud Explodes is a fuzzy paean to rainy cities like our hometown of Manchester," The Empty Page reveal. "Anyone that has ever spent much time in the North-West can attest to the fact that it’s always bloody raining. We think that’s one of the reasons why cities like Manchester and Liverpool are full of creatives. There is so much art, poetry, literature and music here. It’s because we’re always stuck inside having to find novel ways to entertain ourselves."
Elusively erratic and all the way confident, resonant of both the charismatic dynamism of Life Without Buildings and the poignant fervency of Fugazi, When The Cloud Explodes carries the sharp production of the acclaimed duo, Sugar House, and in all its grit it evidences a very able and emergent act.
