Martin Luther King // Assassination Shot

It happened on this date 47 years ago, April 4th 1968, 6:01 pm. Dr. King has just been shot and he's laying unsconscious on the balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was staying, while his colleagues, among which Civil rights leader, Andrew Young, point at the direction of the assailant as he is getting away.

This iconic and shocking photograph was shot by South African photographer and filmmaker Joseph Louw, who was also staying at the hotel, three doors down from King.

I never did photograph him full in the face, he told in an interview on LIFE the following week. I felt I had to keep my distance and respect.
