The Green Inferno

12.7.14

The image above is a blood-soaked Sky Ferreira and was the first teaser from ”The Green Inferno”, the new movie directed by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever/Hostel). The script is co-written by Guillermo Izzo, set around a group of student activists who travel from New York City to the Amazon to save the rainforest. However, once they arrive in this vast green landscape, they soon discover that they are not alone - and that no good deed goes unpunished.

After ingesting both trailers, this movie obviously had me reminiscing of Deodato’s “Cannibal Holocaust”, and it’s sequel “Natura contra”  (English: Against Nature), funnily enough, also known in English as “The Green Inferno”. There’s also Lenzi’s Cannibal Ferox. These movies sent the BBFC and other censorships into a frenzy, causing them to be banned in several countries, but then later revoked by the BBFC. What I liked about these movies is the sense of dreadful irony. At first glance this is exploitation horror, but on a deeper level, the stories had you invested in characters that were going out there to make the world better and put to bed some kind of cannibal myth. But instead the characters somehow always managed to screw-up and become enemies. Eli Roth seems to have brought this exploitation genre back around full circle, with the likes of “Hostel” and it would appear Roth is playing homage to a forgotten 70’s movie genre, rather than making a direct prequel or sequel (which early speculation surrounded).

The Green Inferno is out in the U.S from 5th September.
