Thursday Throwback Classic: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)

12.3.14

Todays throwback classic is the 1973 masterpiece, ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’, directed by John Newland and starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton.

A young couple inherits an old mansion inhabited by small demon-like creatures who are determined to make the wife one of their own. This chillingly dark made-for-television dark fantasy scared the pants of America when it was aired for the first time on ABC networks. Terrifying, but in a different ‘not of this earth’ way - because remember the slasher genre was rife at around time, so to do a premise like this was daring and ahead of it’s time. I remember watching the movie late on the BBC, while at a friends house and usually we’d laugh at most corny 70’s horror, but this one genuinely kept us awake all night.
